The first conference of "Nature Park mayors" took place in the Mühlviertler town Rechberg whose 315-hectare-Nature Park was founded in 1996. With more than 60 participants from several federal states and Germany the conference was well visited. Dr. Silvia Stöger (council member for nature conservation in Upper Austria) opened this annual conference. Beside a close packed conference program, organized by the Upper Austrian Academy of environment and nature, the hosts offered a supporting program which allowed its visitors to encounter the Nature Park and its specific features. The topics of the conference were varied. Theory and practice on subjects relevant for Nature Parks made the conference interesting and diverse at the same time: Dieter Popp of FUTOUR reported on the enhancement of man-made landscapes as a strategy for financial independence in German Nature Parks and showed the important meaning of Nature Parks as a regional economic impulse. He indicated the developments of the Nature Parks in the Südschwarzwald and in Saale-Unstrut and followed the question if the man-made landscape can be protected in spite of global liberalization. The conference members were also informed about news from the Association of Austrian Nature Parks and the development of a Nature Park product line. Other referees reported about activities in various Nature Parks - in special from the point of view of the mayors of Nature Park municipalities (see referees list). The "Nature Park mayors" will meet again in 2002 in the Nature Park Südsteirisches Weinland which is opened in September this year. Like the successful first conference the second will also inform about subjects and projects in Austrian Nature Parks. |
