“Ausgst(r)eckt is’ – recreation in Nature Parks”

THE CONFERENCE

On 4-5th November 2004, the Association of Austrian Nature Parks (VNÖ) organised a conference about recreation, the fourth ‘pillar’ of the Nature Parks. It was held in Waidhofen an der Ybbs at the Nature Park Buchenberg. 10 speakers from scientific and economic backgrounds gave interesting and exciting speeches around the topic “recreation in Nature Parks”. The event was presented by manager Franz Handler and received general approval.

102 participants from Austria, Germany and Switzerland came to the Schlosscenter, in order to hear about and discuss news about current trends and new ideas for what they can offer, discuss successful examples from Nature Parks as well as talk about relevant legal questions in connection with the provision of recreation facilities.
One speech dealt with the question of how the landscape influences the physiological and psychological wellbeing of people – an important knowledge base for decisions around landscape planning in the Nature Parks. Using examples from the provinces of Lower Austria and Styria it was shown how important and rewarding a good cooperation of environmental protection and tourism is for both sides.

THE PRESS CONFERENCE

The member of the provincial government for tourism LR Ernest Gabmann, the member of the provincial government for environmental protection LR Emil Schabl and the president of the VNÖ Mag. Wolfgang Mair participated in the press conference, organised by the VNÖ, on the occasion of the conference. There the new brochure “Ausgst(r)eckt is’ – recreation in Nature Parks” and the “Labelled Nature Park Products 2004” were presented.

Both, LR Gabmann and LR Schabl stressed the importance of good cooperation concerning environment protection and tourism, which is represented in the work of the Nature Parks. Mag. Mair showed the various offers for experience in the Austrian Nature Parks, which reached a peak in the year 2003 with 53.000 participants undertaking guided tours. He emphasised the importance of education about nature for the conservation of cultural landscapes. LR Gabmann introduced the new walking path concept of Lower Austria and refered to the growing demand for walking possibilities as a balance for the stress of today. LR Schabl confirmed this statement through his own experience – as a nature park visitor, as he pointed out the increasing interest of young people for walking.
